Rules for Safe Driving in Saudi Arabia

This is the second article by our regular reader and active member of family of Life in Saudi Arabia Mr. Ashif Hussain Raza. I must appreciate the quality of his writing. Keep up the good work brother. His first article was related to "Causes of Road Accidents in Saudi Arabia"

Only solution to avoid road accidents is drive defensively, it will not only avoid financial loss but also life threatening injuries and disabilities, as LIFE IS A GIFT FROM ALLAH AND WE SHOULD TAKE CARE OF IT. Following are the simple rules to avoid or minimize road accidents.

  1. Stay focused, keeping your hands on the wheel. While driving you must concentrate on the road, keeping your hands at the 10 o'clock-2 o'clock position. Don't do other tasks while driving, some of which are illegal. These include: eating, playing with a child, operating a hand-held cell phone, texting.
  2. Keep your eyes moving, continuously look in your mirrors and scan the road ahead, checking for hazards and slowing traffic so you can anticipate problems before they develop.
  3. Stay alert. Don't drive if you're tired or upset.
  4. Go with the flow. Most drivers know that speeding is a major cause of accidents, but driving too slow can be dangerous, too. Drive at speeds that most other vehicles are going.
  5. Resist road rage: Road rage is a problem, which sometimes ends up in violent confrontations at the scene of an accident, especially between young Saudi drivers and foreign nationals, usually from countries regarded by Saudis as “inferior”. Blame for an accident is sometimes based on nationality, irrespective of who was more likely to have caused it.
  6. Tailgaters: If the driver behind you is right on your bumper, tap the brakes a few times to let the driver know that he's not maintaining a safe distance. If he stays on your tail, slow down gradually. Chances are the tailgater will eventually pass you.
  7. Speeders: If you see a car speeding or aggressively changing lanes behind you, stay in your lane while maintaining your speed.
  8. Make yourself visible. Many accidents occur because drivers didn't see the other car. There are a few simple ways to make your presence known, making the road safer for everyone. They include:
o   Turn signals: Use your turn signals to let other drivers know where you're going. By using your blinkers, other drivers will be able to anticipate your actions and slow down safely.
o   Headlights: Turn on your headlights at dusk or anytime it is raining. This is more for other drivers to see you than for you to see the road. In some states it is illegal to drive without your headlights on while the windshield wipers are in operation.
o   Brake lights: Operational brake lights are a safety must. They warn cars behind you that you're slowing down, signaling them to reduce speed, too.
o   Avoid blind spots: Don't linger in areas where the driver in front of you can't see you. Many people will only check their mirrors before making a lane change. If you're lurking slightly behind and a lane away from another vehicle, assume that the driver of that car can't see you. Either safely speed up or slow down to avoid this scenario, which often results in an accident. This is an important defensive-driving technique.

  1. Driver's duties before operating the engine:

o   Have a look at the vehicle and check tires.
o   Make sure that doors are closed.
o   Adjust the driver's seat and the steering wheel.
o   Fasten your belt and make sure that all passengers' belts are fastened.
o   Adjust the vehicle rear-view mirrors.
o   Notice the fuel and heat indicators on the dashboard.
o   Look at the rear-view mirror that to see the road behind you.
o   Check your mirrors once every 10-15 seconds
o   Push the brakes slowly to stop the car.
o   When the car stops, pull the hand brake.
o   Strictly obey traffic signs and lights, traffic warning, control and guidance     signs, horizontal and floor signs such as paints, illustrations and sidewalks.
