Makkah Madina Train – what would be the cost of ticket?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia never fails to surprise. This time around now, the new surprise has revealed itself to the public. For the past year, there has been a big hustle and bustle about the Haramain trains that will soon open sometime around in 2016. The Haramain trains are packed with the state of the art that will open a whole new era for the transportation sector in the Kingdom. Since the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has to host people from around the world round the year, it has to make sure that it gives the visitors a good experience and a far better experience than the last time they visited.

One of the most difficulties that the people who travel as pilgrims to the Kingdom have to face is excessive travelling. With the extreme climates and changing cities from Jeddah to Makkah to Madina frequently, it does not only waste much of their precise time but also exhausts them and their pockets. To make life simpler, the government of Saudi Arabia will soon launch the Haramain trains that will travel at 300 kilometers per hour linking all the important cities of the Kingdom. Resources have brought to note that the trains will carry around 3 million passengers every year and the number will increase during Hajj and Umrah depending on the number of pilgrims arriving in the country.

It would cost 33 halalas and 50 halalas a kilometer for second and first class tickets respectively on the high-speed Haramain train, according to Arab News. It also means that the ticket cost would be as follows;

Economy Class
First Class
Makkah - Madina
450 Km
SR 150
SR 225
Jeddah - Madina
400 Km
SR 130
SR 200
Makkah - Jeddah
80 Km
SR 25
SR 40

The Haramain High Speed Train has very powerful engines. It can travel at a speed of 300Km/hour. The speed of 300 Km/hour means that it will be able to travel from Makkah to Madina and from Madina to Makkah in the time duration of 90 minutes. Right now, the travelling between these two holy cities takes more than 4 hours. Similarly, travelling time between Jeddah to Makkah will also be reduced significantly. Travelling by road from Jeddah to Makkah takes around 60 minutes. The travelling time will be reduced to only 30 minutes. It will be a real revolution in Saudi Arabia which will reduce the congestion of traffic on the roads. However, this project is expected to be completed by the mid of 2016 which does not look to be possible.

This also means that the trains will transport around 20,000 passengers every hour which will not only make the environment pollution free but also will help achieve 90 percent of its revenue in no later than 12 years. The estimated cost of the trains is SR 63 billion which includes SR 9 billion for constructing the railway stations. The largest station is situated in Rusaifa, Makkah which was established at a cost of SR3.2 billion. The others include the Sulaimaniya station in Jeddah at SR 2.9 billion, Rabigh station at SR1.75 billion and the station at Madinah at a total cost of SR1.545 billion. This will be a 480 km long railway which consists of 5 stations all situated in Jeddah, King AdbdulAziz International Airport and King Abdullah economic city in Rabigh with the inclusion of Makkah and Madina.

There will be about 7 trains operating every hour to and from Jeddah, 2 trains for Makkah and Madinah and 4 trains between Makkah and Rabigh. The fast travelling of tehse trains will also minimize the number of casualties during roadside accidents. The electric trains that will be used are manufactured by Talgo which is a Spanish manufacturer of intercity, high standard and high speed-trains. The trains will offer passengers to take different routes and give them a good amount of security and ease. Apart from this, the entire project also includes the construction of 410 briges, 860 rainwater drainage systems, mosques, helipads, civil defense center, a lounge for VIP passengers, shops and restaurants. This construction will also increase the number of job opportunities for not only the Saudis but also the expats.
