High Use of Viagra in Saudi Arabia

Viagra and other drugs of its nature have been accountable for hundreds of millions of riyals worth of sales per annum in the Saudi Kingdom. However, the high demand for such drugs and the availability of counterfeit drugs in the Saudi market has caused some buyers to get something that they did not bargain for. Erectile-dysfunction drugs like Viagra and Cialis have such an unquenchable demand in the Kingdom that it has allowed a huge black market industry to grow and fulfill the demand the country faces. As reported by Dr. S. Ahmad, a pharmacist in the KSA, the Saudis probably don’t need the drug, but instead just want to try it.


  1. Medical experts claim 50 percent of men over the age of 45, are believed to suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction.
  2. Some pharmacists claim that men in the age group of 30-40 years are the most common customers for these drugs, while another pharmacist states that these customers age anywhere between 20 to 70 years old.
  3. Viagra is also the second most popular drug in Saudi in terms of sale, beaten just by Augmentin which is an anti-biotic.
  4. The purchase of Viagra in the KSA requires a prescription, but 90% of all Viagra sales have been without prescription.
  5. Due to the high prices of Viagra set by the ministry of health, people have been inclined to smuggle large quantities into the country, from other countries that do not have such high prices.
  6. Viagra is also only available in 25 – 50 mg dosages in the KSA and the 100 mg pill has been banned, further enticing people to smuggle and sell these drugs at higher prices.

Risks Involved in Using Viagra
The huge demand for these goods has caused a number of risk factors to arise which the Saudi citizens are endangered to. Most of them have no idea of the side effects of such drugs and their counterfeits may have on their body, since it has only been 6 years that Viagra has been introduced to the Saudi population.
Men buying these drugs without a prescription do not know if this particular medication will affect any other medical problems they might have.

  1. There have been reports of elderly men, dying on their wedding nights after ingesting Viagra.
  2. There have also been reports that Viagra has caused numerous men to be taken to the emergency ward, suffering from heart problems.
  3. Viagra went unchallenged for 3 years in the Saudi market as there were no other competitors supplying such medication, hence its popularity.
  4. Since the availability of options in this particular medicinal field has increased, doctors have been able to recommend the medicine that individuals may use, in accordance to their medical history and the different side effects each drug has.
  5. Men everywhere should put their health ahead of their egos, and find out everything there is to know about these medicines before deciding to take them, and they should choose not to ignore the listed side effects as it can be fatal.
