Who needs to bear the cost of medical insurance of dependents of expatriates?

Medical expenses are a huge expense for the expatriate families living in Saudi Arabia if they are not covered by health insurance policy. It is the responsibility of the employer to pay for the medical expenses of the employee working under his sponsorship and in order to cover it, employer take the insurance policies. There is another reason of taking insurance policy as it is required by Jawazat in order to renew Iqama for employees. Some days ago, we heard that “Medical Insurance is Must for Families to Renew Iqama”. But there had been confusion at least in my mind about shouldering the burden of the cost of medical insurance of families. But today with the publication of an article in the Arab News, it has been cleared up.

Medical Insurance for Family of Expats is to be paid by Employer
It is reported in Arab News that the General Secretary of Health Insurance Council has given a statement that the employers who fail to pay for the medical insurance of their employees and their families will not be issued new visas anymore. He further added that it is binding upon the employers to pay for the medical insurance of all its employees and the dependents of those employees by the regulations of the Health Insurance Council of Saudi Arabia.

How many children need to be covered by Health Insurance?
The Council of Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI) has warned against limiting the number of children covered by the insurance policy of employees. “The company or employer has no right to define the number of insured children in the policy of an employee; the wife and all children up to the age of 25, in addition to unmarried females for whom there is no cap on their age, must be covered in the insurance scheme,” said a statement from the CCHI on Twitter. What if employer does not pay for medical insurance of family?
If an employer does not pay for the insurance of the dependents of their employees, he will not be issued new visas for employees as per the regulations of the Health Insurance Council of Saudi Arabia. I do not recommend anyone to sue his employer on the basis of not paying the insurance for their family members since it will create so many problems in working relationship. Your Kafeel may set Huroob under your status and you know, you will not be able to do anything.
