7 Etiquettes of Drinking ZamZam Water

The religion of Islam offers its followers the complete conduct of life. Islam isn’t just a religion; it is a universe where a man indulges him to find peace of mind and heart. He ties the knot with his Master and Creator. Islam is laid down as a religion that defines the worship of the One and Only God, Allah! Everything that Islam has to offer the people either from this time or the ones of our great grandfathers portrays and delivers the same essence throughout history. It provides them with everything a man needs to know whether be his family, business, etiquettes, satisfying his needs, his hereafter so on and so forth.

Today’s read will talk about the Etiquettes of drinking the Holy Water, I mean ZamZam water! For many of you who don’t know, ZamZam is the holy water that was dug up by the Angel Gibrael for the Prophet Ismail A.S. so that he may satisfy and quench his thirst. There have been several different narrations regarding how this well came about, some narrating that water gushed from the barren empty land when the mother of Prophet Ismail searched for water around the desert. We must keep in view that this well which as preserved till date provides the same water that was drunk by one of the Prophets himself thus it holds high esteem in respect in Islam.

This is the reason why drinking the ZamZam should be drunk in a very proper manner. This Holy water has the tendency to heal, to satisfy and quench hunger and thirst and fulfill anything that the one drinking may wish to ask Allah. There have been certain narrations and hadiths that fully justify this.
  1. Read “Bismillah” before drinking Zamzam Water.
  2. One should drink ZamZam while standing. 
    • Ibn Abbas reported: I served zamzam water to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), and he drank it while standing.
      • Sahih Muslim [Book #023, Hadith #5023], 
      • Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 69, and Number 521
  3. One should drink Zamzam water while facing towards Kiblah - Source
  4. He or she must remember the Almighty Allah and drink the amount of water in three breaths. 
    • Anas R.A. reported that Allah's Messenger (May peace be upon him) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (i. e. he drank in three gulps).  
      • Sahih Muslim [Book #023, Hadith #5029]
  5. In between the three gulps of water he can ask from Allah whatever that he wishes and make as many supplications that his heart desires. 
    • Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The water of Zamzam is good for whatever one intends (while drinking it).
    • If you drink it seeking healing, Allah will give you healing. If you drink it to satisfy your hunger, Allah will satisfy your hunger. If you drink it to quench your thirst, Allah will quench your thirst.

  6. A man should drink as much of the water as he can and after that be grateful to Allah for giving him the opportunity of drinking this Holy Water from such a Holy Well.
  7. The Prophet Mohammad (SAW) has reported on many incidents that the water from this well can be of good for anything that it is intended. Now after so many centuries pilgrims on their visit to the Holy Land of Makah and Medina make sure they bring back good amount of ZamZam for their relatives, family and friends.
    • This water provides healing to those who seek healing
    • Satisfies the hunger of those who are hungry and
    • Quenches the thirst of those who are hungry all if Allah wills
