Why Should I Read the Quran? – An Inspirational Story

According to reports, a Muslim man lived in Kentucky with his grandson. The man, who originally belonged to Palestine, was extremely fluent in Arabic and could read and understand the language too. The grandfather used to read the Qur’an everyday and also had a cup of Coffee with it. The man used to recite the Qur’an in a soft voice; however his grandson could still hear him recite the Qur’an in his room. The young grandson would often find it difficult to recite the Qur’an properly. One fine day, the young boy asked his grandfather, that even though he tries really hard, he cannot read the Qur’an in the same rhythm and fluency as his Grandfather. He even told his grandfather that he could not understand what was written as he was not well versed with the Arabic Language.

The young boy said that even if he could read a portion of the Qur’an accurately, he would often forget what he read, after reading it. He wondered, what is the point of reciting and learning something, which he does not understand or comprehend? The grandfather responded to the inquisitive young boy by handing him a basket made out of straw, which was used to carry coal, to bring fresh water from the stream. The boy excitedly went to the stream and did his best, but the water had leaked out of the basket since there were many holes in between the straw. The grandfather made the young boy try again while telling him to be faster. The boy again repeated his action but still could not bring any fresh water to his grandfather. The boy eventually gave up and told his grandfather it was not possible to bring the water in the basket.

The grandfather again stated that this was possible if the boy worked hard. The boy again repeated the process even though he knew that the water would leak out of the basket. He could still not provide water to his grandfather and told him that it was useless trying again and again.

Once the boy completely gave up, the grandfather told the boy, that the work he had done was not indeed useless and that he should look at the basket in which he was trying to carry the water. When the boy looked at the basket, he could see the visible difference. The basket which was earlier filled with black stains and left over powder from the coal, was now much cleaner than it was before. The boy could finally see the original brown color of the straw which made up the basket. The basket even smelled a lot better than it did before.

The grandfather smiled at the young boy and told him that this is what happens to our heart whenever we read the Holy Qur’an. The grandfather said that even though one might not understand the meaning of what is written in the Qur’an, just reading the Qur’an will clean your heart and your lives from any impurity. This was the lesson that he wanted his young grandson to learn. This is a beautiful way of teaching young ones the value and importance of the Holy Qur’an.
