Complete Masjid al Haram is cleaned in less than 1 Hour

The Grand Mosque in Makkah Masjid Al-Haram is established on 388,375 square meter of area. Mutaaf’s Area (circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba) is comprised on 17,540 square meters. The cleaning process of such a grand mosque is completed in only less than an hour. Maher Al-Zahrani, manager of the Department of Cleaning and Furnishing at the Grand Mosque, said that it takes only 55 minutes to clean the Masjid Al-Haram. The workers perform their washing and cleaning duties while pilgrims are performing their tawaf (circumambulation) and sa'i (stepping up seven times between Safa and Marwa hills).

A source in the cleaning department said that in the holy month of Ramadan, The management cleans the holy mosque after Maghreb prayer. The whole mosque is washed right after the Maghreb prayer to make it clean and hygienic for pilgrims and visitors to pray. Officials in charge of the mosque cleaning said that it takes only 55 minutes to clean the entire Grand Mosque complex. More than 2,500 cleaners armed with 2,542 cleaning tools and equipment like special floor cleaning vehicle, vacuums, hoses and brooms is on a daily basis removing about 143 tons of trash from the Grand Mosque. Mutaaf’s Area which is on 17,540 square meters is washed and cleaned only in 20 minutes. This means the washing and cleansing process of a square meter area is completed in less than 13 seconds in spite of the crowd of so many people in the area.

Only a careful amount of water is used in the cleaning and washing the mosque. The cleaning department is very much determined to maintain cleanliness and keep the Grand Mosque clean and organized for the ease of the guests of Allah. Only 400 liters of water is used by the workers for every 5,000 sq. meters for cleansing. This shows that one liter of water washes 12.5 sq. meters. In Ramadan, They also collect 98 tons of waste on a regular basis. About 17,000 rugs of various sizes have been provided to The Grand Mosque, the number of rugs can be increased when required. Within 45 minutes the cleaners arrange to dispose of 60% of the waste this means a ton of waste dispose of each minute before the Isha prayer. An awesome task performed in spite of condensed crowds in the area.

Modern and most highly developed machineries are used in Masjid Al-Haram for cleansing. The cleaning workers perform cleansing by quickly move around with powerful vacuums with higher the suction rating, hosepipe with powerful driving a mechanical device and brooms that can clean every corner and gap. The source said the cleaners use floor cleaning vehicles more than brooms as brooms can pull dirt and waste along with it to other places.

The source said that a unique floor cleaning medium according to the requirements of the Grand Mosque is designed; this cleaning vehicle or medium is also used in the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The vehicle collects up to 245 liters of waste and it does not consume much space. It is also quick and less time-consuming, easy to manage and more hygienic.
