In the earlier months of 2003, during the Afghanistan war, which had been mainly caused by severe conflicts between the Al Qaeda and the United States, she returned to her homeland Pakistan. In March of the same year she was named as a courier / messenger as well as a financier for the Al Qaeda by Khalid Sheikh Muhammad. The American Federal Bureau of Investigation also known as the FBI subsequently placed Dr. Aafia Siddiqui on the list of “WANTED FOR QUESTIONING”.Shortly afterwards she disappeared off the face of the earth for quite some time before she was finally arrested from Ghazni in Afghanistan by the Afghanistan police on 17 July 2008. Along with Dr, Aafia Siddiqui the police found many notes, documents and other paperwork which clearly showed how to properly make bombs; they also found many containers of sodium cyanide. She was then held for further questioning by both Afghanistan police and American authorities.
While in custody Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was shot in the torso by the United States Army and Federal Bureau of Investigations Personnel as they claimed that she shot at them first with a rifle which was placed near her by one of the United States’ interrogators.Since little over a year the American authorities have refused Dr. Aafia Siddiqui the right to contact her family and by the pictures which were leaked of her in detention, she seems to be kept in a horrible state.
Ever since Dr. Aafia Siddiqui had been sentenced to 86 years behind bars, the family and supporters of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui have protested against this verdict back in Pakistan. Before her communication with her family was cut off she described her first Ramadan behind bars to her family saying that it was very hard but she was braving these days as she thought it was a test by God for her and she wanted to complete the test
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s family states that since Dr. Aafia was a little girl she has been regularly fasting in the month of Ramadan. They stated that she was probably 8 or 9 years old when she started to fast and has kept all her fasts ever since. Her family stated that since she was a young girl she did not care whether it was too hot or whether she had to go to school, she would adamantly fast and participates in the setting up and serving of Iftar and Suhoor.
