Israel is the picture of Jewish continuity. It is the only nation in the world that population lived in the same land with same name, language, and worships the same God. The people of Israel are also called the Jewish People. The people of present day Israel share the same language and culture shaped by the Jewish traditions and religion accepted all the way through ages starting with the founding father Hazrat Ibrahim A.S. who lived in the Land of Canaan, that presently known as the Land of Israel. The name Israel originates from the name given to Hazrat Yaqoob A.S.. His 12 sons were the roots of 12 ethnic groups that later grew as the Jewish nation. The terms Israel, Israeli or Jewish present the people of the same origin.
The history of Isreal started from the conquests of Joshua. This was the era of 1000-587 BCE when there was the rule of Israelites in the land of Israel. This period is also known as the Period of the Kings. The most significant King David made Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel, and first Temple in Jerusalem was built by his son. The year 587 BCE scripts a turning point in the history of the land, when the Babylonian army conquered Jerusalem. After capturing the Jerusalem, army not only destroyed the Temple, but also ejected the Jews to the land of Babylon which is currently known as Iraq. The region has a very rich past and ruled by many super powers from time to time such as Babylonian, Roman and Byzantine Empires, Ottoman Empire, and the British Empire, Persian, Greek Hellenistic, Islamic and Christian crusaders.
After the eviction of the Jews by the Romans, the Jewish people travel different countries of Europe and North Africa. In the Diaspora, they set up their lives in a rich and cultural and economic atmosphere, and they started becoming the part of the progress of the societies they were living in by contributing greatly. But the wish to return to their homeland Israel was still remain for centuries. Till the mid of the 20th century a large number of Jews immigrated back to Israel from Europe and the other Arab countries. In the period of British Empire in Palestine, the army of the Arab states and the Arab inhabitants were targeted Jews and the focus of their aggression and violence was on Jewish people. During the 2nd World War, the Hitler rule in Germany created the greatest tragedy by killing about 6 million Jews.
Illegal migration became the main forum for the Jews to enter in Palestine. They used small boats to enter the state by breaching the British barriers. Many Jews from Arab countries started travelling towards Palestine overland. Despite the fact that British tried to control the Jewish illegal immigration, more than 110,000 Jews entered Palestine during 14 years of the clandestine immigration of Jews. When the British realized that they couldn’t stop them, they allowed the Jews to enter Palestine 750 per month. At the end of World War II, the Jewish population of had reached to the 33% of the total population of Palestine. In an order to win independence, the freedom fighters Jews waged a guerrilla war against the British rule. The British imprisoned many Jews who were trying to enter Palestine including large numbers of children and orphans. The Jewish resistance movement in 1946 bombed the British Military Headquarters killing 91 people.
The British Labour Government had referred the matter of Palestine to the newly formed United Nations. The United Nations declared the partition plan. Immediately following the declaration of the new state of Israel, the superpowers United States and Soviet Union, accepted the new state. The Arab League Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq refused to accept the UN division map of Palestine. Arab states brought forward their forces and the first Arab–Israeli War started. A day after the declaration of independence of the State of Israel, armed forces Arab states, including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, attacked Israel. This was the beginning of the War of independence and sovereignty. Arab states have fought four wars against Israel together such as in 1948 War of Independence, in 1956 Sinai War, in 1967 Six Day War, and also again in1973 Yom Kippur War.
Regardless the fact that the Arab armed forces had the statistical advantage over Israel; Israel defended itself every time and won. By pushing Arab armies back and not only that it conquered some more territory that had been included in the state. Israel signed ceasefire with Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan and also with Syria. No definite peace settlements were signed between countries. With the effect of this ceasefire settlement, Israel's new borders, named as the Green Line, were built. The Arab states did not accept these international boundaries or division of borders. The population of Israel went up from 800,000 to 20 lacs between 1948 and 1958. In 1949, this new rising and promising nation took few steps for the progress of the emerging state. Education was declared free and also compulsory for all people until the age of 14 years.
During this era of Austerity Period, food garments and fixtures or furniture had been allotted to the people. Refugees were mostly those who had no money or belongings with them. Many were residing in temporary camps. In 1952, more than 2 lacs immigrants were in tents or cabins constructed by the government. Israel got huge financial help from private aid from foreign country mostly from the United States. To meet the financial demands the new state signed a damages treaty with West Germany. Israel received numerous millions marks and entered in ambassadorial relations with Germany. Today, the Israeli state is progressing so much in every field of life. Hebrew is the main language of the state and is spoken by the majority of the population in everyday life. The country categorized as third position in the world in the number of academic degrees per capital. Israel is the most highly developed country in the Middle East in economic and industrial fields. Israel is one of the largest weapons exporters in the world, and ranked as 4th largest arms and weapons exporter in 2007.
