10 Facts about Riyadhul Jannah, the place with Green Carpet in Prophet’s Mosque

  1. The center of Prophet’s masjid is named as Riyadhul Jannah which is considered as the most auspicious location of Masjid e Nabawi. It starts from the rawdah of Holy Prophet PBUH and extends till his pulpit.
  2. It is called the part of paradise on earth and Muslims visiting masjid attempt to offer two rak’ahs for their forgiveness by Allah. One Ra’akh at the place of Riyadhul Jannah is equal to 1,000 times offering prayers.
  3. It is called as garden of Paradise by Holy Prophet PBUH, this statement of Holy Prophet PBUH clearly shows the significance of this area of masjid for all Muslims. At the eastern side of Ar-Riyadhul Jannah there is house of Hazrat Aisah (R.A) most beloved wife of Holy Prophet PBUH. The Minbar (Pulpit) is at its western side and Qibla is situated at its southern side.
  4. The significance of Riyadhul Jannah has increased due to authenticity of this place for acceptance of prayers. It is believed that if a supplication is made at that place, it is never rejected by God.
  5. Entire Masjid e Nabawi is carpeted with Red Carpet but the area of Riyadhul Jannah is carpeted with Green Carpet. It is just to segregate the Riyadhul Jannah from other parts of the Masjid.
  6. Riyadhul Jannah has two main gates which are properly secured by security police. The actual size of this area is 22 meters in length and 15 meters in width. The tiny area is opened during Ummrah season but remain closed during Holy Pilgrimage (Hajj). 
  7. Holy Prophet Pbuh said “The area between my house and my Minbar is one of the gardens (riyaad, sing. Riyadhul Jannah) of Paradise, and my Minbar is on my cistern (hawd)” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1196; Muslim, 1391.
  8. Another Hadith narrated by Yazeed ibn Abi ‘Ubayd mentions that “I used to come with Salamah ibn al-Akwa’ and he would pray by the pillar which was by the mus-haf, i.e. in the Riyadhul Jannah. I said, ‘O Abu Muslim, I see that you are keen to pray by this pillar!’ He said, ‘I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was keen to pray here.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 502; Muslim, 509.
  9. Timing for woman and man visits are different. Women can visit Ar-Riyadhul Jannah after Fajr, Zuhr and Isha prayers. The door keeps open for long duration after Fajr prayer whereas it has to be opened just for 15-20 minutes after Zuhr.
  10. The area is closed sometimes as people try to enter all at once whereas it can only adjust only few hundreds. The discipline issues are the main reasons for which it remained closed during most of the time in pilgrimage. People don’t take care about safety of other people which results in stampede and suffocation. People become very desperate going inside the gate of Ar-Riyadhul Jannah and hit other in their craziness. Discipline and self-control should be adopted by everyone visiting mosque of Holy Prophet PBUH otherwise their virtues may be rejected by God. The first step is to pay respect to the holy places and showing gratitude towards others who have same level of enthusiasm like you to visit the garden of Paradise.
