Abuse has become a prevalent topic in some societies, and a social taboo in some. Whether it be physical, verbal, sexual or psychological abuse, some societies are more open in talking about them than others. We must realize that simply by not talking about it, abuse will not go away but will instead grow under the collective ignorance of the society. It is being reported that at least one battered and beaten woman is arriving every day for shelter and help at the shelter located in Al Ahsa. This comes in accordance to a report by the Social Affairs Ministry. The report by the Social Affairs Ministry has revealed that around 25 percent of the cases had involved those women who had been assaulted by their husbands.
The majority of those women who had arrived to the shelter in order to seek protection were Saudi national females who had several complaints of different kinds of abuse which is something that requires the hand in hand cooperation and involvement of not only the police but also the courts. The Ministry of Social Affairs has also stated that a lot of these battered women had been under the age of 18. They added that several attempts had been made to resolve their cases without the presence of any discord with their husbands and other family members. In accordance to a report, a total of 878 domestic workers who had fled from their sponsors were being held at the shelter for over the last 1 year, with most of them having arrived in October.
The report has further revealed that there are 288 maids of Ethiopian origin, 180 hailing from the Philippines, 137 coming from Sri Lanka, 95 of Kenyan origin, and also 41 Indian nationals. The Ministry of Social Affairs has questioned these workers in order to see whether they had been subjected to physical abuse, sexual abuse or psychological abuse. It is truly a sad state of affairs that such a large number of women of both international origin and Saudi origin are being subjected to all types of abuse right here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the renowned homeland of the religion Islam.
Men in the Kingdom must really ask ourselves whether this is what Islam has taught you. Is this what our religion’s role model, The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has taught you from his actions and his life? We must ask ourselves that why is it that we are ready to die or to kill for the honor of the women of our family, however we do not think twice before putting a hand on the honor of the daughter, wife, sister or mother of someone else. Is that not hypocrisy at its finest.
The authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have been trying endlessly to protect the rights of all women in the Kingdom, so perhaps what is needed now is a change of mindset of the men in the Kingdom.
