Wives can request “C-Section” without Husband’s Approval in Saudi Arabia

Women in Saudi Arabia, under the current laws, have the complete right to request a c section or caesarean delivery without the consent or approval of their guardians or husband. This statement was made by a member of the Shoura Council Mona Al Mushait, who also works as a consultant in gynecology and professor at the King Khaled University, stated that permission of the guardian or husband is only required in those cases where a hysterectomy is needed for medical reasons. This is in accordance to a report by a local publication. Al Mushait had made these comments while she had been presenting a paper which was titled Health Empowerment of Women regionally and also globally at the First Gulf Conference for the Patients’ Rights in Riyadh.  Also Read: Why C-Section cases increased by 67% in Saudi Arabia?

Al Mushait also stated that much more must be done to provide the necessary treatment for women who are beyond their reproductive years, which includes communicable sort of diseases. This move would greatly help reduce the marginally high costs of treatments which the patients must bear and also the deaths which are rising from diseases such as breast cancer. She also stated that there should be various specific programs which will be aimed at providing for those women who have special needs, also including those who have lost their sight or hearing. This particular type of care has been indeed stipulated under the 10th development plan of the country which is running until 2020. The adoption of a health program for women is directly in line with the Millennium Development Goals which had been established in 2000, of which the Kingdom is a signatory too. The Kingdom is currently still working towards the realization of these goals and objectives before the end of 2060. The health empowerment amongst the women is something which has been of huge concern over the last few years, regionally, locally and internationally, she stated. The private and public health sectors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have evolved, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting this incredibly vital factor, and also thanks to God. She stated that there are various programs which have indeed been adopted by the Kingdom locally, which also included the Commission for Health Specialties. Academic Programs such as the Sheikh Mohammed Al Amoudi Chair for Women’s Health Rights and the Princess Nora bint Abdullah Chair for Research on Women’s health have already been setup. Other initiatives also include the Raeeda Association for Womens Health, Breast Cancer Association and the Laha Initiative by the Ministry of Health which has provided incredibly essential psychological, social and physical care for these women.
